Mark 10
2
And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
3
He answered them, "What did Moses command you?"
4
They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to put her away."
5
But Jesus said to them, "For your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.
6
But from the beginning of creation, `God made them male and female.'
7
`For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,
8
and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh.
9
What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder."
10
And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter.
11
And he said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her;
12
and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

Marriage is sacred union between a man and a women consecrated by God. At the time the vows are taken by the couple, each one is filled with joy and high expectations of the life that they will share in this holy union. Unfortunately, expectations sometimes diminish quickly as real life circumstances present themselves. All marriages are battle tested in one form or another, anyone that is, or has been married can attest to that. Some enjoy the fruits of a happy healthy marriage; other marriages are sustained by the couple working together to resolve the issues that present themselves on a daily basis; still other marriages fail, some quickly, and others after many years, for one reason or another.
The words of this Gospel reading are a very difficult pill to swallow. Jesus tells us that in the union of marriage the two become one flesh, and the one who divorces their spouse and marries another commits adultery. The complications in today’s world cause many couples to divorce, some remarry, some do not. We have all been touched with this reality ourselves or in our own families.
Life is not easy, and marriage is only complicated more and more because of this fact. We should all take the time to pray for each other as we try our best to make it through life one day at a time. We need each others support and love, especially when we are faced with the realities of a difficult or broken marriage.
May God continue to bless all married couples; and all those that have suffered the effects of a broken marriage, that he will bless and comfort them with his peace and love.
